The Kano State Zakkat and Endowment Board says it disbursed N10.9 million to the needy during the just concluded Ramadan fast in the state.
The Director-General of the Board, Alhaji Sufiyanu Gwagwarwa, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kano.
He said the money, which was collected from well-to-do Muslims as alms (Zakkat), was shared among 1, 300 indigent persons in the state.
Gwagwarwa said that out of beneficiaries, 1, 000 people collected N10, 000 each, while the remaining 300 received N3, 000 each.
He disclosed that another batch of 225 persons was given a bag of rice each under the first phase of the distribution exercise.
“The money was disbursed twice during which 1, 000 people collected N10, 000 each and 300 others received N3, 000 each.
“In addition, the board has also distributed 225 bags of rice to the same number of persons, all in an effort to alleviate their sufferings during the Ramadan period.’’
The director-general said the committee set up by the state government to ensure effective collection of the alms would soon go out to continue with the assignment.
“The collection was suspended because of the Ramadan period; so the committee will soon continue with the assignment,” he said.
He urged wealthy Muslims in the state to pay their Zakkat promptly, to enable the board to disburse same to the poor in the society.
Gwagwarwa also urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the money given to them. (NAN)
