Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has issued a statement addressing the backlash she received for endorsing colleague Yul Edochie’s controversial second marriage to Judy Austin. Jegede had stated on a podcast that Yul Edochie had done “nothing wrong” by taking a second wife, which many saw as insensitive to his first wife, May Edochie.
In her apology statement, Jegede explained that her words were not articulated clearly and were misconstrued as trivializing May Edochie’s pain. She expressed deep regret for any distress caused and clarified that her remarks about polygamy were meant to reflect its cultural context, emphasizing that how it is practiced is crucial.
Jegede stressed that her comments were not intended to diminish May Edochie’s struggles or those of any woman in a similar situation. She acknowledged that she does not have personal knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Yul Edochie’s marriage and expressed her respect for May Edochie’s endurance in the face of adversity.
