Youths charge CAN leaders to close ranks

2 Min Read

Christian Youths have pleaded with leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to put their differences aside and work for Christian unity and peace of the nation.

The youths made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday.

There has been apparent rancor in CAN since the recent general election of the association that produced Mr Samson Ayokunle as President.

The Chairman of the Catholic bloc of the association, Mr Onyeka Ofurum, described the activities of some youths, whom he said, were blackmailing the CAN leadership as unacceptable.

“We call on the past and present leaders of CAN at all levels to practise their teaching by forgiving each.

“We condemn the activities of some unguarded youths who are sponsored to protest and create false impression to the public against the CAN leadership,’’ Ofurum said.

The youth leaders called on the Federal Government to be mindful of the lop-sided appointments in the security architecture and other executive positions in Nigeria.

They also criticized some State Governments “closing churches in the guise of noise pollution, particularly in Lagos and Kaduna States.

“We condemn the humiliation of our members in Osun State by the enforcement of hijab in schools.

“We also condemn the teaching of discrimination and hate ideologies to the younger generation.’’

They also condemned what they described as the attempt to introduce Islamic criminal justice system in the nation’s secular constitution as well as the attempt to scrap Christian religious education in schools curriculum. (NAN)
