Sequel to last Friday’s massive protest by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a factional group of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has given the Federal Government of Nigeria a one-week ultimatum to release detained Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu or face massive sanctions.
The group through its Director of Information, Uche Madu, on Monday said it would embark on an unprecedented level of non-violent protest at the expiration of the ultimatum if Kanu had not been released by then.
It compared the scale of the impending protests to the ones embarked upon by Mahatma Ghandi of India and Martin Luther King Jnr in the United States of America.
The sanctions will include, Madu said, civil disobedience, civil unrest, non-cooperation, civil and massive boycott.
MASSOB blamed governors of the South East extraction for not doing enough to ensure Kanu’s release while also casting aspersions on Igbo National Assembly members, traditional rulers and other leaders.
While emphasizing that it would hold Igbo governors and senators responsible if Kanu is not released by the expiration of the ultimatum, MASSOB declared its support for the IPOB and its cause.
“For the sake of Biafra’s love for our fatherland and the spirit of brotherhood, MASSOB shall continue to identify with genuine and selfless Biafra agitation as showcased in Nnamdi Kanu.
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will worsen the already fragile security situation in Nigeria. Factional MASSOB, IPOB and other genuine groups are now ready,” Madu stressed.
