WTO accepts Okonjo-Iweala, Buhari’s nominee for DG, shuns Egypt’s protest

World Trade Organisation (WTO) has accepted the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Buhari’s nominee for Director-General.

This is coming after the Egyptian government which earlier nominated Mr. Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh for the same position, kicked against Okonjo-Iweala’s nomination.

Egypt argued that Nigeria had violated the rules that governed the WTO which gave a deadline of November 30th, 2019 for African countries to submit their candidates for the Director-General position, hence Iweala’s candidacy should not be recognized.

Accepting Dr. Ngozi’s nomination, WTO put up a statement on its official website. It reads, “Nigeria, on June 09 2020, nominated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the current Director-General, Mr Roberto Azevedo, who has announced he will step down on 31 August 2020,”
