An oil painting by Paul Gauguin has smashed the record for world’s most expensive artwork after selling for £200 Million.
The painting, of two Tahitian girls, by French, Paul Gaugin titled Nafea Faa Ipoipo “When Will You Marry?” Was painted in 1892 and was bought by a museum in Qatar from a private Swiss collector.
The Gaugin artwork had been owned by Rudolf Staechelin, who is a retired Sotheby’s executive from Basel, Switzerland.
It had been in Basel’s Kunstmuseum on loan for more than 60 years, but Mr Staechelin decided to sell it after falling out with the institution.
This is the second time Qatar will be setting milestones in the art world, with the previous record in 2011 when it paid $259 million for The Card Players by Paul Cezanne
