Woman walks out of rubble three days after Synagogue collapse

2 Min Read

A 45 year old woman walked out of the rubble with zero assistance around 2 a.m. on Tuesday as officials continued their rescue efforts at the collapsed Synagogue Church of All Nations, in Lagos.

South-West spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the woman had been trapped under the rubble since Friday but seems hale and hearty.

“She was traumatized, so we didn’t want her to talk. But she sustained little injuries on her ankle and wrist,” he said.

Eight more bodies were recovered overnight, bringing the death toll to 57 and 131 rescued.

On Monday, three police dogs were deployed to aid in the search and rescue of trapped bodies.

Mr. Farinloye said the dogs have been helpful and rescue efforts could be over by Tuesday night at the latest.

The building that collapsed within the church premises was initially a five storey building, the church decided to add three more floors to the structure.

Olutoyin Ayinde, the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, told reporters that the scene on Sunday that although investigations are ongoing, there was no evidence to show that the church obtained a permit before developing the existing structure.

“We have no proof that there is a permit,” he said.

“We’ve asked the engineering team to meet us and after two hours now no member of the engineering team has come because we have questions to ask.”
