Wildlife park acquires more animals through exchange programmes

The Jos Wildlife Park on Sunday said it had replenished its stock with more animals through exchange programmes.

The General Manager of the park, Mr John Doy, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos.

Doy said the animals were acquired through exchange with Audu Bako Zoo, Kano and Sanda Kyarimi Zoo in Maiduguri, Borno

“We acquired a pair of crocodile, red-fronted gazelle and male Equis Calabus through exchange programme with the two zoos.

“The step is expected to reposition the park for more revenue, which will be ploughed back to make the facility more attractive.

“We are planning to further equip the park to meet the needs of modern researchers and compete globally with other Parks,” he said.

The official said the park had recorded a breakthough in captive breeding by effectively nurturing the Nile crocodile, Derby Eland and Dwarf cattle as a result of improved feeding and medication to the animals.

He said with that development, the animals in confinement had bred younger ones and added to the park’s varieties and number, which could also be used for exchange programme with other parks.

Doy said the park had initiated efforts to replace the lion killed earlier in the year when it escaped from its cage during feeding routine.

He expressed satisfaction at the level of patronage despite security challenges in the state.
