Lawyers for Julian Assange have asked a Swedish court to overturn an arrest warrant for the Wikileaks founder.
Thomas Olsson, one of Assange’s lawyers, said on Monday, in Stockholm, that this was because of a ruling by a UN panel that his stay in Ecuador’s London embassy amounts to “arbitrary detention”.
He noted that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said that Assange’s “detention” should end and he should be entitled to an enforceable right to compensation.
The lawyer insisted that the group maintained that the arbitrary detention of his client should be brought to an end, that his physical integrity and freedom of movement be respected.
Olsson said the legal team considered that there have arisen a number of new circumstances which meant there was reason to review the earlier decision. (Reuters/NAN)
