Maria Tembo, a woman in Zambia, has asked a local court for a divorce from her husband she has been married to for 20 years after he educated her from primary school to the university level.
In a surprising turnaround the court reprimanded and ordered Maria to pay her husband, Vincent Tembo, K10,000 (N364,626) for abandoning him after she had obtained a degree in teaching, rather than issuing the divorce.
In his evidence, the husband lamented before the court how his wife, who now “speaks English like an American,” abandoned him because of the college degree she obtained at his expense.
The two tied the knot in 1997 and have two children together.
