Godwin Obaseki’s candidature for the Edo gubernatorial election received a major boost on Saturday after some members of his main opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s family rejected their son for his sake.
The family members who spoke on Saturday in Benin City said that the decision to reject their son was due to the “too much baggage” compromising his candidature for the September 19 election.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Osazee Ize-Iyamu described Obaseki as the right candidate for the job, noting that the “last three years and eight months are sufficient proof”.
“The family is not sentimental about their decision. We are unanimous about this and Obaseki is our preferred candidate at this time. Ize-Iyamu, compared to the technocrat governor, is no match, by any standards,” he stated.
According to him, “Obaseki has fixed roads that lead to our houses without asking questions about the people who live in such neighborhoods. Our public schools are looking better than private schools in Edo State and we have not had a single strike by workers in the state under Obaseki.
He added, “More importantly, members of the Ize-Iyamu family who are retirees have been receiving their monthly pension without stress under Obaseki. These are things we did not enjoy when Osagie Ize-Iyamu was chief of staff and secretary to the state government.”
When contacted, the Director of Media and Communication of the Ize-Iyamu Campaign Organisation, John Mayaki, declined to comment on his principal’s rejection by his family.
