Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has explained why the group has demanded the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
According to him, the chairman of an electoral umpire appointed by one of the presidential candidates could not be expected not to be biased.
He added that Afenifere was skeptical about the preparedness of INEC to conduct a credible, free and fair elections in 2019.
Adebanjo, 90, made this known in Toru-Orua, hometown of Bayelsa State Governor, Hon Seriake Dickson during the burial ceremony of his late mother, Mrs Goldcoast Dickson.
He said, “We have said it before that we don’t have any trust in INEC as it is presently constituted. In fact, we are of the view that the whole team should be disbanded.
“For us to have a free and fair election, there should be no relation of a contestant in the presidential election in INEC’s leadership.”
Adebanjo also restated Afenifere’s commitment to the restructuring of the country, saying Nigeria was currently dangling on the edge.
