The Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu has identified poor welfare of personnel and lack of equipment as the conditions breeding bad eggs in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a statement released by the palace on Thursday, Oba Akiolu made the comment in an interview after a private visit of the American Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Leonard, to his palace.
In the statement titled, ‘Oba Akiolu Calls For Collaborative Policing’, the monarch was quoted as saying that the police play a pivotal role in the nation’s security.

“The Monarch also identified the Nigerian Police as an important player in the nation’s security system noting, however, that lack of equipment and inadequate welfare of officers had bred bad eggs among the personnel, just as he affirmed that the Police is servant to the public and admonished officers to treat civilians as they would love to be treated after service,” the statement read in part.
He urged every Nigerian to be security conscious and not hesitate to supply vital information that could aid security agencies in their task of securing lives and property.
“Security is everyone’s business and we all need to be security conscious. You see something, you say something,” Oba Akiolu was quoted to have said.
The traditional ruler decried the influx of people into Lagos, saying it was putting pressure on the infrastructure and security architecture of the state.
Commended Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his efforts in improving security, Oba Akiolu called on traditional institutions and residents to support his administration.
He explained that such support can be through obeying laws and paying their taxes.
