Why military can’t interfere in Nigerian politics again – IBB

Babangida

Former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida aka IBB has said that the military can no longer interfere in Nigerian politics.

He said this during an appearance on Channels Television on Friday.

According to him, military intervention robbed Nigeria of true federalism.

He added that Nigerians would no longer tolerate the military’s dabbling into the nation’s politics as they are more interested in Nigeria becoming a truly democratic nation.

“I think that (failure to achieve true federalism) is one of the effects of the aberration of the military regimes. It countered the democratic process.

“Such things happen. But I believe it will not happen again. This is because Nigerians are more interested in becoming a truly democratic nation in Africa and, such thing, I don’t think it will happen,” Babangida said.

Meanwhile, IBB said the late civil rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi SAN, never wanted to be seen with him because he was perceived as an “evil genius.”

“He (Fawehinmi) is a good critic and he doesn’t want to be seen with someone that people already perceived as ‘an evil genius.’

“I like listening to him. I made it a point to become his friend. He was very friendly with one of my former ministers, the late Alex Akinyele; they were very good friends, and he tried to make us very good friends.

“If we come up with a policy, my first question to my staff was: What would Gani Fawehinmi say?” he said.
