Chelsea are sorely in need of a striker with both Oliver Giroud and Alvaro Morata not finding the net frequently enough to take the Blues a gear higher this season.
Maurizio Sarri has in recent weeks been forced to use Eden Hazard as an auxiliary forward and while this has worked– think the 2-1 win over Manchester City– the Blues are still in need of an out-and-out striker.
Enter Gonzalo Higuain. He’s had a tepid season at AC Milan so far following his move from Juventus in the summer and he hopes that reuniting with the coach who managed him through his most productive season in Italy would bring him back to form.
The problem, however, is Chelsea have to move on Alvaro Morata to be able to afford Higuain. It gets worse: Morata has agreed a loan move to Atletico Madrid, but with the Spanish outfit struggling to offload both Nikola Kalinic and Gelson Martins, they seem incapable of being able to afford Morata’s £120,000 a week wages.

According to Goal.com, Atletico have reached an agreement that would see them pay €3 million (£2.6m/$3.4m) to bring in Morata for the remainder of the campaign, with the option to pay a further €40m (£35.2m/$45.6m) to buy the forward in the summer.
The fact that AC Milan also need a replacement for Higuain only adds an extra dimension to an already complicated situation. The Italian outfit would like to bring in Genoa’s Krzysztof Piatek, who will set them back around €40m (£35.2m/$45.6m).
All in all, it promises to be an interesting window for Chelsea, but first they have to navigate a tough match against London rivals Arsenal who they have a 6 point lead over. A win in that game could effectively end the Gunners’ hunt for Champions League football through the League front and it could leave Chelsea with one less rival to contend with in the race for fourth place.
