Upon the ascension of the throne by Charles as the King of England, his wife Camilla is now the Queen Consort (Queen by marriage).
You have probably been wondering why the idea of Camilla becoming Queen rubs many people the wrong way so here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the events leading to her becoming the Queen Consort.
Prince Charles (now King Charles) and Camilla met in their early twenties and developed a budding romance for several months. Unfortunately, it is rumored that he could not marry her because he was required to marry a virgin, which she was not.
The Prince would later marry Diana, who came with a much more suitable title and met all the requirements. It is also rumored that he was initially meant to marry Diana’s older sister but she backed out last minute because she ‘smelled a rat’.
Unfortunately, his marriage to Diana was pretty miserable for both parties. The Prince would not quit his love affair with Camilla, who was also married to someone else at the time. Diana was aware of their affair and so was Camilla’s husband.
A tabloid once released a scandalous leaked phone conversation between the lovers where the Prince wished he was Camilla’s Tampon.
Despite Princess Diana’s efforts to make their marriage work, the Prince was determined to continue his affair. Frustrated, Diana developed severe psychological problems and Bulimia.
After her recovery, she turned to charity and public service and gained popularity but Charles was not having it.
She kept trying to get him to end his affair but he was not having that either. So Diana turned to the press. She is popularly known to have referred to Camilla as “the rottweiler”, because “once she has got her teeth into someone she won’t let go”.
Princess Diana also began to have affairs of her own to which the Prince reacted. They were advised to divorce to avoid further embarrassment to the royal family and so after their separation in 1992, they officially got a divorce in 1996.
After Diana’s tragic death in 1997, the Prince continued his relationship with the already divorced Camilla who got divorced from her own husband in 1995, a year before Charles and Diana’s divorce.
Prince Charles soon managed to convince the Queen to allow him to marry a Divorcee who happened to be his long-term mistress, guess who? You guessed right! Camilla.
The pair got married in 2005, 8 years after Diana’s death.
Although due to Diana’s popularity, it was agreed that should Charles become King, Camilla would be Princess Consort and not Queen Consort.
The Prince managed to get his mother to overrule that too. The Queen expressed her “sincere wish” in a message commemorating the 70th anniversary of her coronation that Camilla holds that position.
Upon the ascension of the throne by Charles, the mistress has become the Queen Consort and the Queen of Hearts may just be turning in her grave.
These events seem like something straight out of a soap opera. The royal family may see it as a caricature but the Netflix show “The Crown” was written based on these events.
