A physiotherapist in an Abuja based hospital, Dr Eze Charles, on Sunday warned that poor posture could lead to excessive strain in the body.
Charles told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that people should avoid factors that cause strain.
He listed several contributory factors to poor posture as stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, abnormally tight muscles and high-heeled shoes.
“In addition, decrease flexibility, a poor environment, incorrect working posture, and unhealthy sitting and standing habits can also contribute to poor body positioning.
“To maintain proper posture, you need to have adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion in the spine and other body region as well as efficient postural muscles,” he said.
Charles however advised Nigerians to reduce stress on the ligament holding spinal joints together, minimising the likelihood of injury.
He said correct posture helps prevent muscles strain, over use disorders and even back as well as muscular pain.
“You must recognise your postural habits at home and in the workplace, and work to correct them if necessary,” Charles said. (NAN)
