The new Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has declared that the Bola Tinubu administration would lift 133 million Nigerians facing multidimensional poverty out of it.
Edu, the immediate-past women leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said this after her resumption of office as minister on Monday.
The Herald can report that the new minister was addressing heads of agencies under her ministry when she made the declaration.
She assured that the Federal Government’s goal of lifting 133 million Nigerians out of poverty was achievable through different interventions and initiatives to reduce poverty.
“What is most important is that we will keep our focus on lifting 133 million Nigerians out of poverty.
“We can do it in phases, a step at a time because with determination and strong will, nothing is impossible,” Edu said.
In a “Nigeria Multidimensional Poverty Index’’ released in November 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the number of Nigerians living in poverty stood at over 133 million, representing 63 per cent of the nation’s population.
