We’ll dethrone you and nothing will happen – 21 kings tell Olubadan

2 Min Read

The crisis among traditional rulers in Ibadan is showing no sign of abating as the 21 kings installed by the Oyo State Government in August have threatened to dethrone the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

The new kings, who were installed upon the advice of a panel set up to review the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration, issued a dethronement notice to the Olubadan, who has refused to recognise them.

The Oyo State Government had installed as kings members of Olubadan-in-Council and some Baales.

According to The Punch, the 21 traditional rulers said that they would recommend the removal of the Olubadan for taking unilateral decisions about issues that concern them and inciting the people against the government.

Led by Oba Lekan Balogun , who is also the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, the new traditional rulers gave insight into the genesis of the crisis plaguing the traditional institution in Ibadan land, in a press conference in Ibadan on Monday.

They said the Olubadan sidelined them and instead held Council meetings with his wives and personal assistants to decide who became Baale or Mogaji, contrary to laid down rules.

They said the Olubadan has been parading himself with some unscrupulous Mogajis in the land and fomenting trouble.

They also said they would not fail to recommend the Olubadan’s removal if he failed to change his ways within 21 days.
