I Wanted to Save But Governors Didn’t Let me- Obasanjo

2 Min Read

Former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo has slammed the executive governors of the states of the nation and said they were part of the problem.

According to the elder statesman, he had tried to save when he was President and the oil price was higher but they wouldn’t let him effectively stopping his efforts.

He revealed this at the 2016 World Pension Summit in Abuja saying that the governors frustrated his efforts to save and that now Nigeria was suffering for it.

He said; “I remember when I was in government and I told, particularly, the governors, ‘please let us save for the rainy days.’ They said no!.

“There was no rain at that time, now that the rain has come; there is nothing we can fall back on to cushion us.”

Obasanjo however, was pleased that the pension fund was not touched even with all the corruption and thievery going about.

“One of the things that make me very happy in the pension scheme is that in the last five years, when almost everything goes, concerning public funds, pension funds remain sacrosanct. I believe that the pension funds are something we must preserve, no matter what we do,” he said.
