Mr. Benedict Peters, a billionaire businessman and Managing Director of Aiteo Group, who has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to the commissions claims.
In a statement by Mr. Sola Omole, Aiteo’s spokesman and its Director for Media and Public Affairs, he disclosed his surprise at the development, stressing that he is not on the run.
Mr. Benedict Peters further disclosed that his lawyers had told the commission that Peters has been abroad for medical reasons when the commission contacted them.
He indicated that in May 2016, medical reports to confirm the claim had been provided by Peters to the EFCC with a request to defer a meeting that they had sought with him until late August or early September.
The statement read in part, “The commission duly acknowledged this request and that period has not lapsed. Additionally, the commission has yet to formally respond to the request or made any other effort to rearrange the meeting.”
Mr Benedict Peters is wanted by the agency for allegedly giving $60m to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, as a part of the $23bn bribe in the last polls.
