WAEC Withholds 47289 Results For Malpractices

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has withheld a total of 47,289 candidate’s results representing 11.04 percent owning to various cases of examination malpractices.
The new Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Charles Eguridu who disclosed this while announcing the release of its November/December 2012 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), at the weekend, in Lagos, decried the incidence of malpractice in examinations, adding that the cases were being investigated and the reports of the investigations will be presented to the  Nigerian Examinations Committee( NEC) for consideration.
According to him, “The incidence of examination malpractice must be checked at all cost if we expect our educational sector to regain not only its past glory, but also improve and compete with those of other nations.  The decision will be communicated to the affected candidates through our zonal and branch offices.”

Emphasising on the results, Eguridu said out of a total of 396,614 candidates consisting of 216,600 male and 180,014 female that sat for the examination, a total of 150, 615 candidates, representing 37.97 percent obtained credits in five subjects and above including English language and Mathematics.
He added that 161,706 candidates representing 40.77 percent obtained six credits and above, 268, 688 representing 67.74 percent obtained credits and above in four subjects, while 309, 706 candidates representing 78.10 percent obtained credits and above in three subjects.
Eguridu explained that a total of 259, 259 candidates representing 66.99 percent obtained credit and above in English language, while 226,608 candidates representing 59.06 percent obtained credit and above in Mathematics.
A total of 49 blind candidates registered for the examination, out of which 23, representing 46.93 percent obtained credits in five subjects including English language, ”he said, adding that blind candidates do not sit for Mathematics and Science practical in WASSCE diets.
The HNO who did a comparative analysis of candidate’s performance in the November/December 2010 to 2012 WASSCE, said there has been an improvement in candidates performance which is due to conscientious efforts by teachers and parents to ensure that their children excel in the examinations.
