The May/June 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, has been released by the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, on Friday.
The examination body however opened its portal for result checking on Saturday.
The Nigerian chapter of the examination body while speaking through the Head of Nigeria National Office, Olu Adenipekun, to journalists disclosed that a total of 878,040 candidates which represents 52.97% of the total number of students who sat for the examination obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics as against 31.28% and 38.68% obtained in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
He said: “A total of 1,014,573 candidates, representing 65.70% obtained six credits and above, 1,167,484 candidates, representing 75.60% obtained five credits and above. While 1,282,204 candidates, representing 83.03& obtained credit and above in four subjects.
He further added: “1,370,049 candidates, representing 88.72% obtained credit and above in three subjects, 1,438,679 candidates, representing 93.16% obtained credit and above in two subjects”.
Adenipekun further disclosed that a total of 137,295 results were seized. The candidates who suffered this fate represents 8.89% of the total population of candidates who sat for the examination.
Explaining the reason for withholding the results, Adenipekun revealed the results were seized in connection with various examination malpractice, he further added that “the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council in due course for consideration”.
