Viral Video: Michael Phelps Races Against Shark Underwater

2 Min Read

American Olympian swimmer, Michael Phelps has stunned fans yet again following the release of a video which surfaced online of the Olympian competing with an aquatic animal.

The athlete was in the video seem competing with a shark trying to show his swimming skills with the aim of out-swimming the aquatic animal.

The Olympian, desperate for the top place however came in the second place in a close call tight fix.

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian came in second with a two-second time lag between himself and the simulated shark.

The swimmer in the competition dubbed “Phelps v Shark: Great Gold v Great White” was shown as part of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.

The shark was reported to have been simulated at a speed of 25 mph and at a distance of 100 meters.

Michael Phelps’ team against the shark designed him a shark skin-like wetsuit and a Lunocet swimfin mimicking a shark’s tail as a leveling ground with the aquatic animal.

Speaking to USA Today, Phelps said he estimates his speed to have reached between “8 to 10, maybe 12.”

He added: “But for me, it actually gives me more of an appreciation for how fast (sharks) move through the water, especially at their size.”

Before the fierce competition, Phelps had said: “Shark Week was always during major competition, so between (pool) sessions, I was watching stuff about sharks and trying to learn more.

“That’s where my biggest nerdy side comes out, because I’m so infatuated with water and infatuated with sharks.”
