Xaviera Steele, the North Carolina female substitute teacher caught on video fighting a female student, has explained her side of the story.
The Herald had reported that the incident occurred at Rocky Mount High School on Monday morning.
This newspaper further reported that the incident started as a disagreement over the student’s cell phone which was apparently confiscated by the teacher.
Steele and the juvenile student have been charged with simple assault, Rocky Moutain Telegram reported on Wednesday, quoting the police.
The substitute teacher was released after a written promise to appear in Nash County District Court, police Sgt. Thomas Meadows said in a news release.
She is due in court on May 11.
Meanwhile, Steele, 41, has defended her decision to fight the student.
She said that she followed protocol during the confrontation which resulted in the fight.
According to her, the student got behind her desk and disrupted her attempt to call an administrator, as protocol demands, three times.
The substitute teacher said that it was the first time in her 22 years working with kids that she would be attacked by a young person.
The teacher said that the “young lady attacked me, went for blood”.
“She took out an inch of my hair from here…,” she said, pointing at her head.
Steele, a mother of four, said that she would quit the teaching following the incident.
She added that she attended school three times to obtain qualifications in real estate and would be considering working along that path.
However, she lamented that her prospects of working in real estate could be seriously hampered should the assault charge go into her record.
