Peter Gene Hernandez otherwise known by fans as Bruno Mars has come under fire from a black woman who compared him to a Karaoke singer or a Wedding singer and claimed he was unoriginal.
The lady who made this claim in a now viral video also claimed that Mars appropriates black culture and uses it to identify with both sides of the racial divide.
The video featured an online panel which discussed the artiste in-depth and a writer by the name of Sensei Aishitemasu argued that the Grammy-award winning singer – who is Filipino, Puerto Rican and Ashkenazi Jewish – plays up his “racial ambiguity” in order to cross genres.
According to her; “What Bruno Mars does is he takes pre-existing work and he takes it word-for-word, recreates it, extrapolates it … He’s a karaoke singer. He’s a wedding singer.”
Bruno Mars has been extremely successful over the last couple of years especially with the release of his 24k Magic album which bagged a Grammy.
Due to his popularity, opinion has been split on the singer with some believing that while he isn’t black, he respects the culture and is heralded in the community while other argue that he is unimaginative and someone who appropriates culture.
