Eighth seed Williams – the oldest Grand Slam semi-finalist for 22 years at 36 – beat the world number 96 from Kazakhstan 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.
The American will next face German fourth seed Angelique Kerber, who beat Romania’s Simona Halep 7-5 7-6 (7-2).
Serena Williams plays Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova later on Tuesday.
Slovakian 19th seed Dominika Cibulkova and unseeded Russian Elena Vesnina complete the quarter-final line-up.
