US-based Nigerian singer and dancer, Korra Obidi, recently shared a distressing encounter involving mistreatment by police officers in Lagos, Nigeria. The mother of two took to Instagram to voice her dissatisfaction with the way she and a friend were treated during a routine inspection of their vehicle on a Lagos road.
In her Instagram post, Korra recounted an incident where a police officer dismissed their request to lock the car doors temporarily to facilitate a more thorough examination of their paperwork. Another unsettling episode involved an officer kneeling on the driver’s seat to conduct a meticulous search of the vehicle’s interior.
During one of the stops, the police officers even proceeded to search Korra’s bag and personal items, which she found harsh and intrusive.
Korra used this platform to call on the police to redirect their focus towards apprehending dishonest politicians instead of unnecessarily harassing young people. She argued that by reallocating their efforts to tackle political corruption, the nation’s high fuel prices might see a reduction.
In her own words, Korra expressed her frustration, saying, “Attempting Taco Tuesday in Lagos. Several police stops with random men manhandling me and searching my bag and personal belongings @frankhasaplan. Lagos Police, let the youth breathe for God’s sake. If you dedicate this much energy to catching politicians who are looting, fuel will not be #560 Naira today. SMH.”
