Unknown gunmen behead retired mechanic, palm wine tapper, display heads in Imo market

Some unknown gunmen on Wednesday beheaded a retired mechanic and a palm wine tapper and paraded their heads in a community market in Orie Okporo, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

A video of the heads circulated on social media, although the motive for the action could not be immediately established.

The Herald gathered that the 70-year-old mechanic was known as Felix Okechukwu aka Akaonyewetere, while the palm wine tapper was Berechukwu Udemba.

“They were killed in the early hours of today (Wednesday). They beheaded the two men and displayed their heads on a table at Ori Okporo market square. They beheaded Felix Okechukwu. He was about 70 years old. He was from Ududu village and was a retired mechanic.

“The second person, Berechukwu Udemba from Amanato-Okpuru community, was a palm wine tapper.

“They killed them in their various houses, brought their heads to Orie Okporo community and displayed them on a table. The families retrieved the severed heads from the market this morning,” a source in the community said.

The gunmen’s actions were said to have created tension in the community.

However, a spokesman for the Imo State Police Command, Micheal Abattam said that the matter was under investigation.
