Uncertainty about husband’s whereabouts: Woman seeks divorce from “relative”

2 Min Read

A housewife, Hauwa Musa, on Tuesday approached a Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, to demand for divorce from her husband’s family, as she cannot establish whether he is alive or dead.

Hauwa told the court that the respondent, one Mr Musa Dangudu, who is a farmer and resides at One Man Village, is an approved representative of her husband’s family.

She said that she got married to her husband, Hussaini Adamu, under Islamic Law in Mubi,  Adamawa, sometimes in 2000.

She added that the union was blessed with five children, who are all minors.

The petitioners said that for five years now, her husband is nowhere to be found.

“Sometimes in 2013, I called the respondent, and told him how my husband was arrested by men of the Nigeria Police and did not know why and where he was detained.

“I approached DSS headquarters, Abuja, and various prisons to find out whether my husband was in custody, but all proved abortive.

“The respondent, who happened to be my husband’s brother and his sister are aware of all I went through all these years, because I confided on them concerning the issue.

“I am tired, and can no longer keep hoping, so I have informed them that I want a divorce certificate, she said.

The petitioner, through his counsel Idris Buba, prayed the court to dissolve the marriage, and restrain the “respondent, his agent, executor from preventing the petitioner from conducting a marriage with any person of her choice.”

The respondent, however, was absent in court in spite court summons issued to him.

The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case until April 30 for further hearing. (NAN)
