UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has condemned an attack on a peacekeeping convoy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Monday.

The reaction came in a statement by his Spokesman, Mr Stephane Dujarric, on Tuesday.

According to him, suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out the attack on a convoy of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).

He said one peacekeeper was killed and another wounded in the incident, which he said, occurred in Beni territory in the eastern region of North Kivu.

Both peacekeepers were Indonesian nationals, according to the statement.

The UN Chief reiterated that attacks against UN peacekeepers might constitute a war crime.

He called on the Congolese government to investigate the incident and “swiftly bring those responsible to justice.”

ADF is a militia group operating in the troubled eastern DRC, a mineral-rich region bordering Uganda and Rwanda.

Formed by Ugandan rebels, the group has been blamed for widespread atrocities in the region.

Guterres said the UN would continue to support the government and people of the DRC in their efforts to bring about peace and stability in the east of the country.
