Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has approved the promotion of all retiring and some retired civil servants in the state, the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports.
The State’s Head of Service, Dr Chamberlain Nwele, made this known at a joint news conference he addressed with members of the organised labour in Abakaliki on Monday.
Nwele said the governor “graciously approved the promotion in the workers’ interest.”
He said that by the decision, the government would commence processing of the entitlement of concerned workers’ retirement.
“The governor has given a special waiver to appreciate them for their immeasurable contributions towards the enhancement of the civil service and the state in general,” he said.
The Head of Service also stated that the governor has donated a bus to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to ease their transportation problems based on a request by the NLC.
“The governor also directed the organised labour to inspect ongoing projects across the state with the authority to stop any that is not in conformity with stipulated terms of execution,” he said.
The NLC Chairman in the state, Mr Ikechukwu Nwafor, described the meeting as an opportunity to air their views and grievances to the governor.
“The governor made some serious commitments and responded to our numerous requests as mentioned in our May Day address.
“We had a good outing with him as he made his views clear on our agitation, which gave us a favourable insight,” he said.
Nwafor said that the governor urged the union to review the issue of workers’ promotion, especially the accruing financial implications.
“He stressed that he did not want to owe workers as that would negate the original intention of approving the promotions,” he said.
NAN reports that the workers on Sunday at the May Day rally, expressed displeasure over the government’s inability to release the results of the 2015 promotion.
