Arsenal are close to being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, after they were hammered 5-1 by German side Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
The Gunners had gone into the match hoping for a draw at the Allianz Arena, which would keep their hope of progress into the knockout stage of the competition alive.
Arsenal had been lucky to beat the Bavarians 2-0 at the Emirates two weeks ago, despite Bayern dominating most of the proceedings.
Many Bayern players, including Wednesday’s substitute Arturo Vidal, had sounded a note of warning to the Gunners, stating that they would see the “real” Bayern in the return leg.
Arsenal indeed saw the real Bayern, falling behind to a Robert Lewandowski strike inside the first 10 minutes.
The North London club however drew level few minutes afterwards, but the goal from Mesut Ozil was ruled out as a foul, Ozil having appeared to have sent the ball into the net with his hand.
Instead of a goal, the Turkish international got a yellow card for his troubles.
Bayern got a second in the 29th minute through Thomas Muller, before a 25-yard stunner from David Alaba one minute to the end of the first half made it 3-0.
All hopes of a comeback for the Gunners were lost when Bayern substitute Arjen Robben scored in the 55th minute with his first touch of the game.
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud showed a flash of brilliance in the 69th minute when he cleverly brought down a looping pass with his chest and took a shot that beat Manuel Neuer hands down.
Hardworking Muller grabbed his second of the night to complete the rout one minute to the end of regulation time.
Arsenal, who were without first choice defenders Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny, had their trouble compounded when Greek side, Olympiakos came from behind to beat third-place Dynamo Zagreb 2-1.
With these results, Arsenal are rooted to the bottom of the group with 3 points out of four games, with Bayern and Olympiakos joint first with 9 points.
