Uber Technologies Inc. has entered into a multi year agreement with Tom Tom NV, a Dutch maker of navigation software for the provision of map and traffic data to its drivers worldwide.
The agreement signed yesterday covers over 300 cities worldwide, however the financial details of the deal remain unknown.
TomTom’s digital-map assets are highly sought after as it is one of the few global companies with digital map assets.
Earlier this year, Uber offered $3 billion to Nokia for its mapping business, however it was sold to a consortium of German car makers.
Mapping data is important to Uber as it seeks to develop self-driving cars. Earlier this year it leased a 53,000 square foot facility and has also employed top robotics talent from Carnegie Mellon University to aid in research.
