WBC world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury claimed a controversial split decision win over over former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
One judge ruled 95-94 in favour of Ngannou, while two gave it to Fury at 96-93 and 95-94.
Fury’s WBC belt was not on the line in the “Battle of the Baddest” in Riyadh, although Saudi officials hoped the match would help boost the nation’s profile as a boxing destination.
The 37-year-old Cameroonian knocked down his 35-year-old British opponent in the 3rd round but the reigning champion was able to continue.
After the loss, Ngannou said he would not give any excuses.
“This was my first boxing match, great experience – I’m not giving any excuse,” he said in a ringside interview.
Fury also paid tributes to his tough opponent, describing the fight as “probably one of the toughest” he’s had in a decade.
“He’s a very awkward man, and he’s a good puncher and I respect him a lot,” he said of his opponent.
However, some boxing experts and enthusiasts expected Ngannou to have been declared winner of the bout.
Taking to X, British middleweight Chris Eubank Jr, wrote, “Watching from ringside I thought Ngannou won the fight. It was close but he was the aggressor, landed heavier shots & scored a knockdown. Fury deserved to lose after having so much trouble against a man who has never boxed before… too much time filming Netflix specials not enough time in the gym I’m guessing. Unlucky Francis.”
Boxing legend, Mike Tyson wrote, “The true champ of the evening @francis_ngannou. So proud how you performed.”
Ghanaian singer, Shatta Wale said, “True Champion @francis_ngannou. We all know and can see you Won the fight but they said otherwise.. A true African warrior they never Saw you Coming for the throne.”
