Chelsea have expressed sadness as a former player, Christian Atsu is confirmed as one of the many victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
The Ghanaian star was a Chelsea player between 2013 and 2017, having signed from Porto, but did not make a competitive appearance for the Blues senior team as he was constantly on loan.
Atsu, 31, was confirmed dead by his agent in Turkey, Murat Uzunmehmet, who said his remains were found under the rubble of his apartment in Antakya, Hatay.
The Hatayspor player had been missing since the February 6 quake that rocked Turkey and Syria. The 7.8-magnitude quake killed no fewer than 43,000 people in both countries.
“We have reached his lifeless body. His belongings are still being removed. His phone was also found,” Uzunmehmet told DHA news agency
“There are no words to describe our sadness.
“We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person,” the club tweeted.
Hatayspor, Atsu plied his trade with Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle.
His former club, Chelsea also expressed sadness at the player’s death.
“Chelsea sends our heartfelt condolences to Christian’s family and friends and to all those affected by the earthquake tragedy,” the club said in a statement on its website.
