“It’s misinformation to say Gowon stole half of Central Bank” – AfDB President replies British lawmaker

AfDB President, Akinwumi Adesina

President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has hit back at British lawmaker, Tom Tugendhat, who accused General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) of “stealing half of Nigeria’s Central Bank”.

In a tweet on Thursday, Adesina said that the former Head of State is a man of integrity.

He added that accusing the elder statesman of corruption is “misinformation”.

Recall that Tugendhat made the claim, which hit Nigerians like a hurricane, during a debate at the UK Parliament on Monday.

The UK parliamentarians were debating a petition calling for sanctions against Nigerian government and Army officials for violating human rights of Nigerians during and after the #EndSARS protests.

Reacting to the claim, Adesina tweeted: “Be careful of misinformation! H.E. General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity. I know him. A great and admirable elder statesman of Nigeria. His honesty and integrity are impeccable.”

Gowon himself slammed Tugendhat in an interview with the BBC, dismissing the lawmaker’s claim as “rubbish”.

“I don’t know where he got that rubbish from, I served Nigeria diligently and my records are there for all to see,” the octogenarian stated.
