US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose fresh sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
Trump expressed his concerns on Monday, stating that Putin “should make a deal… I think he’s destroying Russia by not making a deal”. The US already has heavy sanctions in place against Russia, but Trump hinted at possible additional measures.
“We’re talking to [Ukrainian president Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, we’re going to be talking with President Putin very soon,” Trump said. “We’re going to look at it.”
The threat of fresh sanctions comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for at least 200,000 European peacekeepers to prevent a new Russian attack after any ceasefire deal.
