Trump Defends US Visit to Greenland Amid Criticism

1 Min Read

US President Donald Trump has insisted that sending a delegation to Greenland was not a provocation, despite criticism from Danish officials. Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring the arctic territory from NATO ally Denmark, citing its strategic importance for international security.

Greenland’s prime minister and Denmark’s foreign minister had condemned the planned visit by Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, and Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance. However, Trump claimed that the visit was friendly and not provocative, stating that the US had been invited and that Greenlanders liked the idea because they felt abandoned.

The US delegation’s visit aims to build partnerships that respect Greenland’s self-determination and advance economic cooperation. However, critics view the visit as a charm offensive to pull Greenland towards the US.

Trump has previously refused to rule out the use of force in acquiring Greenland, citing the growing presence of Russia and China on the mineral-rich island. US officials argue that Greenland’s strategic importance is increasing, making it a key focus for national security.
