Trouble Awaits Nigerians Travelling Abroad In 2016

2 Min Read

If feelers from those in the know in the aviation sector are anything to go by, Nigerians intending to travel abroad in 2016 may experience difficulties because of a looming crisis in the sector.

This is because international airlines that operate the international routes have reportedly planned to reduce the air traffic to Nigeria by the beginning of 2016.

According to Thisday, the airlines may resort to this line of action because they cannot exchange their naira-denomination revenues running into billions into dollars.

This has reportedly made it impossible to repatriate the revenues to their various countries because of the new fiscal policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

While some of the airlines have reportedly set up plans to change their aircraft that currently ply the Nigerian route to others with smaller capacity, some plan to reschedule and reduce the number of flights to Nigeria and others have toyed with the idea of stopping flights to the country entirely.

It was gathered that British Airways would from March 2016 change its Boeing 747 which operates the route to an aircraft of smaller capacity because of the problem.

Reports also have it that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have appealed to the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele to intervene, while yet another delegation has reportedly met the Minster of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, over the issue.

The meetings are yet to yield any meaningful fruit.
