Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has taken responsibility for his error that led to Zimbabwe’s dramatic late equalizer in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Troost-Ekong acknowledged that he allowed Tawanda Chirewa to dribble past him too easily, leading to the Warriors’ stoppage-time strike.
The Super Eagles had taken the lead through Victor Osimhen’s 74th-minute goal, but Chirewa’s equalizer left Nigeria’s qualification hopes in jeopardy. Troost-Ekong, who won the Most Valuable Player award at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, took to social media to apologize for his mistake, saying “Responsibility taken. Same target ahead. We will do it together! Nigeria Super Eagles”.
