Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage is urging fans to celebrate collaboration over competition within the music industry. In a recent interview with BET, Savage addressed the tendency for fans to pit her against other female artists.

“Fans always try to pit me against other female artists,” she said. “Any new female artist that comes up, they would be like, ‘Yo, she is coming to take her throne.'”

Savage emphasizes her belief that music is a space for collective growth, not rivalry. “I would go out of my way to make friends with them [new female artists] because it is not a competition,” she explained.

The award-winning artist even suggests a shift in focus: “The real competition are the male artists.” Savage highlights this point by referencing the recent Grammy win for Best African Music Performance by a female artist, Tyla.
