Tinubu Set To Launch Birth, Death Registration Portal

2 Min Read

President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 launch an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System and Geospatial Data Repository.

Speaking at a pre-launch briefing in Abuja on Monday, Nasir Kwarra, the Chairman of the National Population Commission, noted the e-CRVS launch signifies the government’s commitment to strengthen civil registration processes in Nigeria and ensure timely access to vital event statistics. The initiative aims to improve civil registration and vital statistics systems over a decade, from 2023 to 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Kwarra further highlighted that the collaboration between the commission and the United Nations Children’s Fund has resulted in the development of the eCRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report. This report showcases the potential of digital technologies to revolutionize CRVS and securely store data at scale in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Furthermore, the Commission has entered into a Public-Private Partnership with Barnksforte Technologies Limited to implement the Vital Reg System. This digital system will encompass various civil registrations, including birth, stillbirth, adoption, marriage, divorce, migration, and death. The system will generate digital certificates for all registrations and provide a platform for verification by registered organizations. It will also feature a centralized management system for collating and analyzing vital statistics, enabling informed decision-making.

Kwarra emphasized that the transition to this electronic system marks a significant departure from traditional paper-based methods and aligns with international best practices. The digital CRVS is set to revolutionize the recording, tracking, and analysis of vital events in the country.

In addition, the National Population Commission has utilized cutting-edge Geographic Information System technology to map the country in preparation for the first digital Census in Nigeria. This geospatial data repository, covering various dimensions, will also be launched for public and private sector use. Additionally, President Tinubu will inaugurate the CRVS National Coordination Committee.
