THISDAY Newspaper Suspends Editors Over False Oyedepo US Visa Story

2 Min Read

The management of THISDAY Newspapers Limited  has suspended two of its deputy editors, Mr. Yemi Ajayi and Mr. Olawale Olaleye for disseminating false information about Bishop David Oyedepo to the public.

Earlier on, the news agency had published a story, claiming that Bishop Oyedepo was denied visa by the US Embassy and that the bishop lost his temper at the embassy.

A lot of people were shocked by the news.

However, few hours later, the US Embassy as well as Bishop Oyedepo’s church, Winners Chapel stated that the news was false.

While the Embassy described the claim as outright falsehood, the Living Faith Church on its part said Oyedepo had an existing visa and did not leave the Otta, Ogun State headquarters of his church on the day the newspaper claimed he was involved  the ‘visa drama’ at the Embassy.

THISDAY wrote: “Following the rebuttal, the newspaper management investigated the publication and found that the two deputy editors failed to follow its well established traditions of carrying out the necessary checks and confirmations expected of personnel of their status in a sensitive story of that nature.

They were, therefore, suspended indefinitely.”

The newspaper said it published a Corrigendum on on 1 February, acknowledging the error in the publication, and apologized to the revered Bishop for the embarrassment the story might have caused him.
