Third Term Agenda: Fayose wants to complete truncated first term

2 Min Read

Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose has expressed his desire to stand in for the governorship election in the state in 2018 which may be perceived as an attempt at a third term.

Fayose was impeached in 2006.

However, the Supreme Court in 2014 nullified the impeachment that ousted Fayose from office about seven months to the end of his first term.

The governor, however, believes contesting would only give him a chance to complete his first term which was cut short by impeachment.

Fayose while speaking on a live television broadcast in Ado-Ekiti Monday evening said he had commissioned the distribution of his campaign posters in order to achieve two alternative objectives.

He said, “The continuity poster you see my image in and which is spreading across the state can be interpreted in two ways. First is the need for me to ask the apex court to explain its 2014 ruling that my so-called impeachment in 2006 was illegal, null and void and consider a re-election in 2018 so that I can complete my term.”

A second reason for the posters according to the governor was to identify someone like him who could continue in his tracks when elected governor of the state.

Fayose stressed that the Supreme Court must first determine the question of his eligibility to contest for a third term before the 2018 governorship poll in the state could hold.

The often controversial governor took office for his first tenure in May 2003 but was impeached on October 16, 2006. He however defeated then sitting governor, Kayode Fayemi in 2014 and was sworn in on October 16, 2014 for his second term.
