There’ll be internal problems – Iwuanyanwu warns Biafra agitators

Businessman and war veteran, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has advised Biafra agitators to stop, saying all Nigerians must work for the nation’s unity.

He spoke Sunday at a ceremony to mark his 78th birthday organised by the University of Nigeria (UNN) Alumni Association, Owerri branch.

The ceremony also marked the institution’s 60th anniversary.

According to Iwuanyanwu, disintegration would not solve Nigeria’s problems.

However, he called on the Federal Government to restructure the federation to accelerate its development.

“We have to fight today for the future of our children. We must restructure; it is only when we restructure that the nation will be stronger.

“We must work hard for the unity of Nigeria. I’m not supporting the group talking about break away. No nation has ever survived from breakaway, there would be internal problems,” the elder statesman said.

He added that Biafra was not defeated during the 1967 – 1970 civil war.

“I fought the last battle at Uli airport;  Biafra never surrendered, we were not defeated, it was a negotiated surrender, no victor, no vanquished. We were just assured no trial for Ojukwu by Philip Effiong who was second in command to Ojukwu and we believed them and stopped fighting.”

He re-echoed his call for the establishment of state police, saying the present policing structure was ineffective.
