In Japan on Saturday the alleged oldest person in the world passed away.
A 117-year-old Japanese woman, named Nabi Tajima, local official’s told AFP Sunday.
Nabi Tajima, was born on August 4, 1900, and died around 8:00 pm (1100 GMT) on Saturday at a hospital on her native Kikai Island in Kagoshima region, according to Susumu Yoshiyuki, a health and welfare official.
The previous oldest person in the world Violet Brown a Jamaican who died in September 2017 at the age of 117 years, 189 days.
Since Brown’s death, Guinness World Records has been investigating who is the oldest person in the world and was yet to recognise Tajima as such.
The organisation however deemed the oldest man in the world to be 112-year-old Masazo Nonaka of Japan as of April 10th.
“Ms Tajima was living at a nursing centre for the elderly. In January, she became weaker, so she was taken to a local hospital,” Yoshiyuki told AFP.
“She died there (Saturday) due to her advanced age,” he said.
Japan is known for the longevity of its people and has been home to several oldest title holders.
There are around 68,000 people aged 100 or older in the country, the government said last year.
The oldest person ever to live was Jeanne Louise Calment born 21 February 1875 and died 4 August 1997 she was a French supercentenarian who has the longest confirmed human lifespan, living to the age of 122 years, 164 days.
