“The possibility of extradition is now zero” – Nigerians react as Diezani bags Dominican citizenship

Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the news that former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke has become a citizen of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Reports say the nation’s hopes of extraditing the ex-minister to face charges may have dimmed with the status of Diezani, who is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with an alleged N23.29billion poll bribery scam.

According to the anti-graft commission, the ex-minister is also wanted for N47.2 billion; $487.5million; N23,446,300,000 and $5milion (about N1.5billion) in various Nigerian banks.

She is also linked to many luxury properties in Nigeria and abroad, including a $37.5million Banana Island property.

But investigations show that Diezani got a diplomatic passport, DP0000445 from the Dominican Government on May 21, 2015, few days before the Goodluck Jonathan administration left office.

The Nation reported that her citizenship was confirmed by a May 29, 2015 approval letter by the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Roosevelt Kerry.

She was also appointed as a Trade and Investment Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Following widely-circulated reports of the ex-minister’s new status as a citizen of the Commonwealth of Dominica, which has reportedly shown no interest in returning her to Nigeria to face charges, Nigerians took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

However, many of the commentators mistook Dominica for the Dominican Republic, which is a different nation.
