The fifth edition of The Best FIFA Football Awards will kick off at 7 pm Nigerian Time today.
Following the cancellation of the Ballon D’Or for this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, football fans all over the world had been looking forward to the FIFA Football Awards for consolation and it has finally arrived.
The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2020
Well, most of the fans can’t wait to see The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2020.
There are three elite goalscorers in the running: Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich/Poland; Cristiano Ronaldo – Juventus/Portugal; and Lionel Messi – Barcelona/Argentina.
Although 33-year-old Messi is the current holder, Lewandowski is the overwhelming favourite for the award.
Why Lewandowski?
Between July 20, 2019, and October 7, 2020, that the award is judged on, the 32-year-old Polish striker proved himself above everyone else, especially his rivals.
Besides winning the German Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League – and humiliating Messi’s Barcelona along the line, Lewandowski scored 60 goals for Bayern Munich in just 52 appearances between those dates – 20 more than any other player to play in the ‘top five’ European leagues.
The Best FIFA Women’s Player
The three finalists are Lucy Bronze (Manchester City/Lyon and England), Pernille Harder (Chelsea/Wolfsburg and Denmark) and Wendie Renard (Lyon and France).
Other awards
Other awards to be handed out are: Best Men’s Coach, Best Women’s Coach, Best Men’s Goalkeeper, Best Women’s Goalkeeper, the FIFA Puskás Award, the FIFA Fan Award and the FIFA Fair Play Award.
