There’s a new trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi film “Elysium,” starring Matt Damon as a mortal earthling who suits up in robotic gear to take on the 1%. “Elysium,” like Blomkamp’s 2009 film “District 9,” melds sci-fi, thriller and social commentary.
“Elysium” is set in the year 2154 and Jodie Foster and the other members of the privileged live on the space station Elysium, where there’s no war, poverty or sickness. In classical mythology, Elysium is also known as the Island of the Blessed, where heroes who are favored by the gods and granted immortality are sent.
In “Elysium,” the unprivileged 99% reside on earth. But a sickly Damon appears in need of medical resources and says he has to get to Elysium. He’s told that by wearing a special “boom saw” suit, he can break into heavily guarded paradise and save everyone on earth.
“Elysium” will be released on Aug. 9 and also stars Sharlto Copley (“District 9″). Watch the trailer.
